WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC will play host to one of the biggest tournaments in USA Rugby Sevens history – the NACRA Championships.
This year, the NACRA Championships present a very different incentive to participating teams: Olympic Qualification. For the first time in the history of the Summer Games, the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will feature a Rugby Sevens competition for men and women.
Both the Men and Women’s Eagles Sevens are fresh off of successful seasons where both teams came close to automatic qualification. The Men and Women finished sixth and fifth in their respective series, but only the top-4 in the standings would auto qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Despite just missing the cut, both teams enjoyed immense success in their respective series. The Women’s Eagles narrowly missed automatic qualification with a fifth place finish, barely missing out after a loss to England in their final match of the season. The men ended the season ranked sixth, a major improvement over their 13th place last year. They also went on to win their first-ever HSBC Rugby Sevens Cup victory in the U.S.’s 16-year history on the circuit.
The only team on the schedule that played the United States in any of their Sevens Series games is the Canadian men who finished ninth in the series standings. In their five meetings, the Men’s Eagles defeated Canada four times, outscoring their opponents 88-79 across all five matches.
