Queensland Barbarians side welcomes AIG MCAAs to final Tour stop
BRISBANE – The AIG Men’s Collegiate All-Americans Tour to Queensland sponsored by WellDog ends Saturday night at Ballymore Stadium, where BLK Queensland Premier Rugby Barbarians awaits for an 80-minute clash.
The Tour has ramped up to this point, as the MCAAs beat a young Darling Downs Select Side team in Toowoomba in the first match before facing a much more polished Brothers Rugby Club side this past Wednesday. The Barbarians team will have veteran experience eclipsing that of the MCAAs, with players hailing from each of the nine Queensland Premier clubs – an all-star team, in a sense.
Tour captain Aladdin Schirmer reclaims his starting role at No. 8 in Head Coach Gavin Hickie’s side. The Central Washington University Wildcat came on as a second-half substitute Wednesday and aided the MCAAs’ comeback bid with a try and multiple assists, though the team ultimately succumbed to a late penalty goal from Brothers. Conor Kearns was another influential reserve in the loss, and returns to the fly half position behind Nick Boyer of University of California, Berkeley.
Saint Mary’s College’s Dino Waldren earns his first start for the MCAAs in the front row, and Gael teammate and Dave Sitton Memorial Trophy winner Dylan Audsley – who has accounted for 16 points in two matches – will sweep the back line wearing No. 15. Lindenwood University’s Deion Mikesell and Brigham Young University’s Tua Laei have already accumulated two tries Down Under, and Saturday’s match will mark the first time on Tour the two will patrol the wings together.
“It’s great for the players from America to get experience with the game out here in Australia and for our boys it’s an opportunity for them to get [rewarded] at the end of the season playing against a touring side from another country,” Barbarians Head Coach Nick Fogarty told Redsrugby.com.au.
The final match of the AIG Men’s Collegiate All-Americans Tour to Queensland sponsored by WellDog will be broadcast live from Ballymore Stadium by DoubleTake Productions at 5:30 a.m. ET Saturday. The online stream can be found on the Tour Facebook page.
