AIG MJAAs Developmental Camp begins Friday at EATC

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – Head Coach JD Stephenson and the AIG Men’s Junior All-Americans staff will work with a 50-man wider training squad at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center Jan. 13-16 during the Developmental Camp.

Sixteen members of the under-19 squad that beat its Canadian opponent in a two-match series in southern California over the holiday break will attend the Camp, which will provide Stephenson and Co. with the data necessary to select a match-day squad. The MJAAs must play Canada in order to qualify for the late-summer World Rugby U20 Trophy in Uruguay.

While the MJAAs Developmental Team featured athletes eligible for the Boys High School All-Americans, numerous players heading to Chula Vista this week were identified through the three Identification Camps held in December in Marietta, Ga, Phoenix, and Vallejo, Calif. There are players still on the MJAAs’ radar that were unable to attend camp due to academic reasons or injury.

“There is a wealth of athletic talent spread across this country, and our Identification Camps allowed us to watch some athletes that had been previously unavailable to us,” Stephenson said. “At this point in our calendar – seven months from the U20 Trophy – our focus is on bringing these players up to speed in terms of the national team game plan and what it takes to represent their country on the international stage.”

The Camp roster includes eight MJAAs from last year’s Trophy in Zimbabwe, including capped Men’s Eagle Lorenzo Thomas. The experience of the returnees will also be beneficial to the coaching staff in order to create continuity from year to year.

Additionally, the Developmental Camp will coincide with the AIG Men’s Collegiate All-Americans Identification Camp at the EATC Jan. 14-16. Following five on-field training sessions between Friday and Sunday, the coaching staff will create three squads for competition against their MCAA counterparts Monday.

The age-grade coaches will continue to scout players in competition throughout the spring ahead of a June assembly prior to the U20 Trophy Qualifier against Canada. Athletes are encouraged to gather match footage for the purpose of submitting highlights to coaches. Videos and statistics can be sent to Coach Stephenson (
