South Recap: True South and Carolinas/Georgia Springs to Life Saturday, Join Florida's Rugby Action

Women’s Division II:

While the men’s sides in Carolinas/Georgia and True South resumed play Saturday, the women left Florida’s teams to take over all of the news for one last weekend.

The Tampa Bay Krewe blasted the Indian River Raptors Saturday, shutting out Indian River 95-0. 

About 90 minutes up Interstate Four, Fort Miami played a much closer contest against the Orlando Griffins.  Fort Miami won the game 22 to 12.

Men’s Division II:

Carolinas/Georgia

In the north, the Greenville Griffins and Southern Pines RFC contest resulted in a tie, with a final score of 26 to 26.  Southern Pines held a 14 to 0 lead at the half, but Greenville caught up with Southern Pines in the second half.

In the south, Atlanta Old White hosted their crosstown rivals, the Atlanta Renegades.  The contest ended with a win for the home team, with the Old White defeating the Renegades 21 to 17.  Conversions were the difference, as Old White successfully converted all three of their tries; while the Renegades only went one for three in conversion attempts.

Florida

The Boca Raton Buccaneers beat Miami Rugby 48-16. The Tampa Bay Krewe defeated the Naples Hammerheads 21-0.

True South

The True South’s Northern Clubs took one last Saturday off before joining their South teams this upcoming Saturday.

New Orleans Rugby defeated Baton Rouge Rugby, 40-7. 

The Birmingham Vulcans played host for the Montgomery Yellowhammers.  In the end, Birmingham won by a sizeable margin, 55-21.

Men’s Division III

In Men’s Division III the Carolinas Conference, the Asheville Iguanas defeated Triad Rugby 30-24.  Asheville capitalized three tries, three conversions, and three penalty kicks.  The Triad Rugby also scored three tries and three conversions, but only one penalty kick.

Florida

Further south, in Florida, there were three contests.

The Gainesville Hogs defeated the Tampa Bay Krewe’s D3 side 27- 6. 

Also, in Florida, the Brevard Red Eye rolled over Indian River’s Raptors 67 to 11.  Brevard scored 11 tries and six conversions, while limiting Indian River to just two converted tries. 

Wrapping up Florida’s Division III, the Sarasota Surge scored just one penalty kick, but that nonetheless gave Sarasota a 3 to 0 win over the Saint Petersburg Pelicans.

Georgia
In Georgia, the Division III sides of same two Atlanta rivals, the Renegades and the Old White, also engaged in action on Saturday, but with opposite results.  The Renegades won by a 24-11.

Also, in Georgia Saturday, the Augusta Maddogs won a rather unusual 43-35 game against the High Country RFC, with each team being awarded a penalty try.

The Savannah Shamrocks mauled the Gwinnett Lions 101-3.
