“Rugby fans from all over the country will make their way to see another great match against one of the best teams the world of rugby has to offer,” said USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville. “We are excited to be returning to Chicago for this important match. Soldier Field provides a Unique fan experience and electric atmosphere.”

A long history

The first recorded rugby match played in the U.S. came in May of 1874 between Harvard University and McGill University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. From there, the game caught fire on college campuses across the country. Rugby would soon become the game of choice at major college campuses, leading to the first U.S. national team selection.

On November 16, 1912, the U.S. played their first ever international match against Australia.

The U.S. would go on to lose that match by score of 12 – 8. The loss was a minor speed bump however, as the USA would go on to win the gold medal in rugby at the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympic Games.

Shortly after the 1924 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee made the decision to remove rugby union as an Olympic sport. Without Olympic incentive, the appeal of the sport dwindled across the country.

Due to renewed interest in the sport in the 1970s however, there was a need for a national governing body to represent the USA. In 1975, USA Rugby was formed.

In their first ever international match, the USA Rugby Men’s Eagles again took on the Wallabies of Australia. The match was played in Anaheim, CA with the Eagles losing a tough match by a score of 24-12.

A new chapter

In their eight total appearances against the Wallabies, USA Rugby’s Men’s Eagles have yet to record a victory.

But that is all history.

With the immense growth of the game domestically, hopes and expectations are on the rise for the USA Rugby Men’s Eagles. 2015 has been historic for U.S. rugby with the announcement of the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens coming to the San Francisco Bay Area and the first-ever Men’s Sevens Cup Win.

When has their ever been a better time for your Eagles to come out and record their first victory against Australia? Now is our time, Eagles Fans! Make sure you are there to help your Eagles bring home the victory and leave for the Rugby World Cup knowing you have their backs!
